Do-It-Yourself Lobster Picnic
Nova Scotians are pretty serious about their lobster, so chances are pretty good that you'll find lobster rolls and lobster chowders and even a traditional lobster supper featured on restaurant menus many, many times on your Nova Scotia vacation.
There's a lot to be said for the convenience of dining in a full service restaurant, but one of our lesser known secrets is the availability of freshly steamed lobster cooked to order at most any grocery store.
All you have to do is pop into our local Sobey's and pick out your lobster and while they cook it for you, wander around the store and pick up some potato salad, (or pasta salad or fruit salad) and some fresh bread. Maybe head just next door to get a bottle from one of our local wineries and then head to the nearest beach or scenic look-off.
You'll likely end up with twice the lobster at half the price - with the added bonus of a spectacular view and a more laid back and authentic experience.
We can even lend you all the necessary lobster crackers and other implements of destruction.
Just be sure to ask us for some picnic spot ideas!

Here along the Northumberland Strait, we're famous for our warmer than expected beaches. In fact, you'd have to travel all the way down to North Carolina to find warmer water!
With at least 10 beaches in our area - one only 10 minutes down the road - you might even find one all to yourself.
Plan a day to laze around in the sand or sit under a shady tree and count the waves. Don't worry if you don't have a lawn chair - we have several you can borrow!
